Is it possible for all of us, in our own work, to be as energetic and creative as rock stars?
We believe so! The key is to discover and work in your own Zone of Genius. This concept is key to us fulfilling the mission of Weave The People, which is to “Free people to be who they were born to be and connect people to unleash collective potential.”
I’m back in the office Monday morning after a weekend of dancing at Lollapalooza in Chicago. I am inspired by witnessing so many great artists, who were performing in their Zone of Genius.
When I see great musical artists, from 27 year old Robert DeLong to the Cure’s 54 year old Robert Smith writing, performing, impacting 1000s of people by unleashing creativity uniquely their own, I am inspired to perform in my own Zone of Genius.
The “Zone Of Genius” concept is from the book “The Big Leap” by Gay Hendrix. This resonates with our mission at Weave The People, which applies equally to our team as well as our customers, we too strive to be everything we were born to be, unleashing the unique genius within us.
Three key concepts for me have been:
- Insight & Belief: It begins by believing that we all have a genius within us and learning about insights into how we limit ourselves.
- Discovery & Connection: Asking meaningful questions helps us discover for ourselves what our own genius is.
- Commitment & Behavior: Once we commit to living in the zone, we need to walk the talk.
This process has led me to discover my own Zone of Genius,:
When I ask myself what I love to do, it is to imagine that which does not yet exist. When I watched the 100,000 people dancing to the music this weekend, with the Chicago skyline behind the stages – I imagine what a Monday morning will be like when the American offices are filled with people all working in their own Zone of Genius. It’s going to be a golden age!
When I observe what I am doing with free-time, I am reading, I am thinking, I am soaking us wisdom teaching, from neuroscience to emerging organizational psychology. Bringing this awareness into my own work life, does not seem like work to me.
As I strive to move more into my own Zone of Genius, I realize I still have much work to do. It takes discipline to step out of the routine of working in the Zone of Competence and Excellence – I know I have been putting off writing this blog post for many months! My hope that spending time to articulate these ideas will nurture the habit of working more in my Zone of Genius and will lead to greater abundance and satisfaction.
The Zone of Genius is compared to three lower Zones. The most seductive being the Zone of Excellence. This is where we are seen as successful in the eyes of the world, and we can sometimes forget there is a higher level of success available! There are times when we of course work in the other Zones, as an entrepreneur, I often have to work in the Zone of Competence, although I strive to delegate more of this as we grow as a company, I am happy to say I no longer balance my own accounts – thanks Chris and Annie!
So on this Monday morning, instead of checking emails, I am starting the week, sharing wisdom, which is core to my own Zone of Genius. (Although I spell checked and formatted the post Tuesday – Zone of Competence!)
